Undergarments:
One of the most importune part of any costume.
BREACHES, DRAWERS,
PANTALOONS AND BLOOMERS
Pantaloons and drawers for women seem to have appeared from around 1800.
Early Saxon breeches (Braies) – later concealed by the tunic, became drawers. Centuries later the garment surfaced in the form of pantaloons or drawers.
Linen and cotton were the most widely used. Woolen is as old as the middle ages, Silk was rarely used except by the leisured class, until late Victorian times.
Initially drawers were made of two tubular pieces of cloth to swathe the legs, and joined to a deep waistband. Methods of fastening were Strings and ribbon up to the middle of the 17th century when buttons also became popular. Until Victoria times when garments became more fitting, underclothing was mostly made with noticeable absent of fit.
